The Aircraft

It’s hard to train for the Aviation world of today when you’re learning to fly in the equipment of yesterday. One of the important facets of the Take Flight Aviation Difference is our modern fleet of Diamond Aircraft.
Designed from a clean sheet, the Diamond Aircraft in our fleet are not here by chance. We tried out every single engine aircraft that could get our hands on before selecting Diamond. In fact, we had operated a fleet of Pipers and our Director of Flight Training managed a fleet of Cessna’s in the past – those combined experiences let us know that neither one of those legacy aircraft fleets really gave us what we wanted. We tried out other composite aircraft, but a combination of poor stick and rudder flying characteristics and operational concerns removed all of them from contention. We were referred to Diamond Aircraft by a client who had experience in them and raved about them.

After extensive research and testing, we were completely sold on the Diamond Aircraft Products. Their narrow empennage (aka aft fuselage) allows for superior cross wind capabilities. Their balanced control surfaces, T-Tails and wing design allow for tremendous control without heavy feeling controls or twitchy pitch sensitivity found in other light aircraft. Their forward of the wing pilot seating allows something no other aircraft offers – unobstructed vision both up and down. Their modern avionics suited them perfectly.
Finally we evaluated safety and reliability. As great as Diamond Aircraft are in every other regard, their safety history sets a standard that NO other aircraft manufacturer can touch – don’t take our word for it – research it for yourself; it’s really impressive. With two years of Austro engine experience already under our belts from operating our DA42NG, we know first-hand how incredibly reliable the engine package is.

There are no magnetos to check, plugs to foul or low lead fuel to pollute the environment. Even better is that the Austro diesel sips 5.1 gallons of Jet-A fuel per hour at a 126 knot economy cruise setting – almost half of what is consumed by a comparable 4 cylinder avgas powered engine. The Gamin G1000 NXI’s Flight Stream 510 supports two-way flight plan transfer, the sharing of traffic, weather, GPS information, back-up attitude information and more, between the G1000 NXi and compatible mobile devices running Garmin Pilot or ForeFlight mobile. Flight Planning has never been so easy!

So a brand new cutting edge aircraft should cost a lot more to rent than the rest than any of our other Diamond DA40’s right? Not so. Due to its low fuel burn, any difference in rental rates is essentially offset by the fuel burn, allowing any difference in overall hourly rates to be nominal.

We have also added a spectacular Diamond DA42NG to our multi engine fleet. This DA42NG is Flight Into Known Icing certified, has Oxygen and the GFC700 auto-flight system in addition to the standard G1000 avionics and Austro Power. Most twin engine aircraft fly pretty much like a powerful single when everything is working well. However, when during engine failure drills, one engine is failed and you lose 50% of your power, but 80% plus of your performance. You as the pilot have to determine which engine failed, feather the propeller and secure the failed engine, while still flying the aircraft safely on the asymmetrical thrust developed by the remaining engine. That’s a handful to put it mildly – and safety is a factor – now add to this the stress of a check ride.

There is one aircraft that this doesn’t apply to – the diesel/Jet-A powered Diamond DA42. The 12 GPH (for both engines combined) Austro Powered DA42 automatically feathers the propeller on the failed engine and takes care of all engine securing automatically; allowing you to concentrate on what’s important – flying the aircraft. This month we’re going to look at the advantages of renting. Taking it from the top:

1) No Capital Outlay – Aircraft renting advantage number one, you don’t have to lay out any money to purchase an aircraft.

2) Maintenance – Not your plane, not your problem. Let’s be honest, when you walk away from an aircraft after a flight, that aircraft is no longer yours to worry about. The upcoming annual inspection, the insurance renewal, the monthly database updates, the flat spotted tire, the cost of storage, worrying about whether that recent wind storm just blew the airplane into the parking lot….simply not your problem.

3) Flexibility – Renting has some enormous advantages IF you rent from a company with a large fleet, a generous rental policy (ie multi day trips, low or no minimum trip rental hours etc.) solid maintenance and multiples of the various types of planes they offer. In a nutshell, you have great flexibility and less stress. Why? Read on….

4) The Take Flight Rental Fleet Access Advantage – Renting aircraft for the pilot who flies a couple times a months is absolutely the way to go. Just add up what you spend on renting an aircraft every month and compare it to the cost of owning the aircraft. While pure economics is a factor in determining if renting is more advantageous to you than renting, there are other factors at play.

Consider the pilot who wants to take a trip out to Nantucket or down to the Outer Banks for few days. Most flight schools either don’t allow these types of trips or place high minimum hours per day for every day the aircraft is away from base. Take Flight Aviation is in the General Aviation Services business, and while we do run a large and growing flight school, we focus on providing services to our customers – aircraft rentals is one of those services we focus on. That focus has caused us to constantly grow our fleet, not only to feed the requirements of our training department, but also to allow for multi day rentals for our clients. We find it unthinkable that a company would teach someone to fly then force them to go elsewhere to gain access to an aircraft.

Going back to that theoretical client who wants to fly to an island one week and maybe down to the Outer Banks the next with their spouse – that pilot could benefit from using two different types of aircraft for their missions. A Diamond DA42 twin engine aircraft is ideal for flying out to the islands where large expanses of water must be crossed, and a DA40 single engine aircraft might be a more economical choice for that flight down to the Outer Banks. When you buy an aircraft either in full or as a partner, you buy one aircraft.
